In addition to the recent award at the Sport Business Prize, the organizers of the Hypomeeting Götzis are particularly pleased that the international athletics meeting was awarded Gold Level by the world association World Athletics as part of the sustainability program
“Athletics for a Better World” (ABW). This recognition, which covers 55 specific areas of action, not only underlines the commitment to the environment and social responsibility, but above all it shows the commitment of the entire volunteer team to make a positive contribution through athletics.
“Organizing and implementing sustainable sporting events, year after year, is an ongoing path that is only possible with the support of the entire team,” emphasizes Alexandra Giesinger, OK President of the Hypomeeting. “We are proud of this award and look forward to being able to set an example for responsible and sustainable sporting events with our event.”
Sebastian Coe, President of the World Athletics Association, on the awarding of the Hypomeeting with the Gold Standard:
"Since we launched our Athletics for a Better World Standard, organisers of the Hypomeeting were quick to take on a leading role, working with all their stakeholders to illustrate how sustainability can be embedded across an entire event. We congratulate them on their gold level achievement. I'm really looking forward to seeing what their passion and creativity will produce in next year's edition.”
The award as part of the ABW Sustainability Program is based on a comprehensive assessment of all sustainability measures of an athletics meeting. To reach the Gold Level, an event must achieve at least 96 out of 120 possible points. The ABW standard includes six pillars, including sustainability planning and collaboration with all stakeholders, waste reduction and management, energy and resource management, travel and accommodation, as well as inclusion, equity, fair competition and health.
World Athletics' ABW program is designed to meet the evolving needs of all world governing body licensed meets worldwide. Starting this year, all World Athletics events will be assessed and ranked based on these measures, depending on how each event demonstrates a commitment to sustainable practices.
With this recognition, the Hypomeeting Götzis celebrates a milestone and also looks to the future with a renewed commitment to sustainability. With a view to the 50th anniversary of the traditional international all-around meeting, further long-term changes are being sought in both the social and ecological areas.
